The Best Google Plus Bookmarklet

by Nate Devore · 16 comments

2012 is the year of the bookmarklet. Scoop.it, Storify, WordPress and others all have their own.

If you don't know what a bookmarklet is, it's a piece of JavaScript code that you can drag onto your browser's bookmark bar. Most times it's a shortcut of having to go to the application or website to achieve the same action.

Google Plus doesn't have an official bookmarklet but there have been several third-party developers who have created different versions of bookmarklets.

I've tried them all…

So far, +AJ Batac has created the best version allowing you to both Google + and share on Google plus any content you are viewing in the browser.

It does have some minor issues and at times you need to be careful if you are writing a post inside of the bookmarklet interface. I had several times where the content was deleted and not posted.

This system works well with +Daniel Treadwell and his plugin that posts Google Plus content to your WordPress blog.

You can read more about it here: https://plus.google.com/115330007912221485186/posts/4hP84q6V6FT

The best? Really? Does it provide any functionality over the Chrome plugin from Google? I’d like to see a bookmarklet that allows me to post either to circles or to my business page — so far that solution eludes me. Facebook bookmarklets allow it but so far, no Google+ joy. If Google really wants me to use Google+, they’ve got to make it easier to use than Facebook, not harder…

@todd79 thanks for the comment! The bookmarklet allows you to share any content you find on the web. You choose any of your circles or make it public. But since there is no official Google Bookmarklet (I imagine they will have something soon) the features of the bookmarklets I’ve seen so far lack.

What I do use this bookmarklet for is to curate content fast.

@natedevore @todd79 Hey, Nate. This bookmarklet doesn’t do anything the official Google+ extension from Chrome doesn’t do. See https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dlppkpafhbajpcmmoheippocdidnckmm

Curation in Google+ is sloooooow compared to Twitter or Facebook using Shareaholic!

@todd79 I didnt see a way for the chrome extension to have it auto include the post and popup so I can input content like the bookmarklet does (unless I missed something). It just took me straight to G+ every time I clicked it.

I do use the google plus share feature from G reader sometimes too. I have this method set because I can include certain items on G+ to be posted to my blog and this is good for multiple areas.

I think too there are several types of curation-both for personal and for premium curation. What do you think?

@natedevore I apologize for communicating so poorly. Here’s how I tried to describe the same issue to Chris Brogan; http://youtu.be/gYLUScgmSv8

@todd79 I totally see your point. There has to be a way to replace the G+ URL with business pages URL. I will dig deeper into it for sure. My focus has been how to distribute content more effectively with either my blog or G+ as the starting point. Thanks for taking the time to make that video too.

Has anyone discovered a similar bookmarklet that would pre-populate the comment box with text that’s been highlighted on the originating page, or would this be difficult to add?

natedevore February 21, 2012 at 2:21 PM

@JimSpice Sounds interesting…can you tell me a bit more what you are trying to achieve? With the wordpress bookmarklet and scoop.it you can highlight any piece of content and it populates it into the post box for publishing. But not the comment box.

Very very good! Finally a decent Google+ share bookmarklet. The only flaw is that the new windows does not auto-close, like the Facebook version.

@todd79 I found a way to post directly to my business page via a bookmarklet

@natedevore @todd79  I found a way to bookmark directly to my google plus business page via a bookmarklet (so it means I have 2 bookmarklets – one for personal and one for the google plus page).
Description is here http://goo.gl/xCvbL. Hope it helps.

@todd79 did you ever find out how to publish to google plus pages?

e1evation March 16, 2012 at 6:04 PM

@natedevore I have found that you can post to your page by typing in the name of your page in the sharing box where you determine who should see your post. I’ll do a screencast for you if my communication is unclear…

As far as I can tell, it doesn't give you the option to +1 the current page, unlike other bookmarklets:

+1 for ScoopIT!
